Players that participate in the Pat Quinn Classic compete for more than a trophy. There are three $1,000 scholarships annually for participants in the tournament.
The Vancouver Canucks Alumni are a foundational partner in the Pat Quinn Classic. Both the tournament and the scholarships recognize Pat Quinn’s passion for creating leaders on and off the ice, and his unwavering commitment to give back to the community.
Two scholarships are sponsored by the Vancouver Canucks Alumni under the names of Pat Quinn and Cliff Ronning – both Honoured Members of BC Hockey Hall of Fame. The third scholarship is under the name of Kirk McLean. Kirk is an Honoured Member of the BC Hockey Hall of Fame and a member of the Vancouver Canucks Ring of Honour. This scholarship is sponsored by Gary Pooni, of Brook Pooni Associates, and a good friend of McLean and the Vancouver Canucks Alumni. The selection committee which includes a representative of the Quinn Family and Cliff Ronning review the applications and select the recipients.
Clearly, 2020 was the year to switch things up. Since we were not able to host a tournament this year, we expanded our eligibility criteria so more players are able to apply. In previous years, you had to participate in the tournament to be eligible for the scholarships. The 2020 scholarships were open to any players registered to a BC-based Bantam Hockey team. That includes male and female Bantam teams from anywhere in BC. The 2020 Scholarships have been awarded, please follow the link below to see the recipients.
Proceeds from the Pat Quinn Classic go to the Pat Quinn Scholarship Fund which supports high performance athletes pursuing postgraduate studies. The fund is managed by Hockey Canada Foundation and more details can be found here.
