Five Pat Quinn Classic tournament players earn the 2025 Vancouver Canucks Alumni Scholarships

Chilliwack, North Vancouver and Vancouver hockey players who competed in the 2025 Pat Quinn Classic have received Vancouver Canucks Alumni Scholarships in recognition of their on-ice hockey skills, scholastic achievements and volunteer contributions in their communities.

“Each year, we are impressed with the high calibre of young hockey players who apply for the Vancouver Canucks Alumni Scholarships,” said Cliff Ronning, honourary chair of the Pat Quinn Classic. “The latest scholarship recipients demonstrate what Pat Quinn stood for – excellence and achievement, both on and off the ice.”

B.C. players who participate in the Pat Quinn Classic are eligible to apply for the $1,000 scholarships.

The 2025 Pat Quinn Classic Vancouver Canucks Alumni Scholarships have been awarded to the following players:

Mykah Cormier (Chilliwack) – Gino Odjick Award

Mykah is a hardworking and determined student-athlete from Chilliwack who plays for the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds U17 team while attending Sardis Secondary School. Mykah believes strongly in making the most of every opportunity and understands the value of hard work—both on and off the ice. Mykah has balanced school, hockey, and even starting his own small power-washing business to help contribute toward the increasing costs of playing competitive hockey.  “This scholarship will go a long way in helping me pursue my goals and education,” said Mykah.

He has competed in the Pat Quinn Classic three times—winning gold medals at the U13, U15 levels. “It’s always been an amazing experience.”  Mykah has volunteered with food banks, supported community initiatives, helped people displaced by flooding, participated in environmental clean-ups, and assisted in a variety of community programs with his hockey teams.  He hopes to pursue a career in heavy-duty mechanics, welding, or possibly firefighting—fields that allow him to solve problems and work with his hands while serving his community.

Jack Mah Ming (Vancouver) – Harold Snepsts Award

Jack plays for the U15 Greater Vancouver Canadians while attending Vancouver College. Through hockey, Jack has developed a deep appreciation for teamwork, discipline, and perseverance—values that guide both his athletic and personal life. This year, he was named captain of his high school hockey team, a role he earned through his character, work ethic and the respect he shows to his teammates.

He volunteers as a teen coach in his former minor hockey association’s development program and contributes his time to Little League baseball. He supports food bank fundraisers through school initiatives and helps with holiday programs that provide gifts to families in need.

“This scholarship will play a big role in shaping my future career and helping me achieve my future goals,” said Jack. He hopes to attend university where he can continue playing hockey while studying sports management.

Charles Payne (North Vancouver) – Cliff Ronning Award

Charles is a member of the Vancouver North West Hawks U17AAA team, while attending Windsor Secondary School in North Vancouver.

Like many families, Charles has faced financial instability meaning that hockey opportunities were never guaranteed. With limited means to travel for international tournaments, he is grateful to play in a local high-calibre tournament such as the Pat Quinn Classic. He is proud to have competed in two editions of the tournament and says he has learned a lot about Quinn’s legacy. “The challenges I have faced have taught me to be resilient, humble, and determined, and they have helped shape me into a committed student-athlete,” he said.

On the ice and at school, Charles natural leadership qualities are evident. He was named team captain of his previous U15 AAA team that won a provincial banner.  In the classroom, he often takes the initiative to lead group projects to achieve a common goal with others.

Each year, Charles and his teammates find better ways to serve their community. In 2025, they adopted a family during Christmas through Family Services of the North Shore. His team has also completed park clean-ups and have served as volunteer coaches for younger hockey players. “Pat Quinn is a role model of mine for what he has done to give back to the game and community,” said Charles. He will use the scholarship funds to help him pursue his hockey and education goals.

Nathan Pope (North Vancouver) – Kirk McLean Award

Nathan plays for the U17 Vancouver North West Hawks while attending Sutherland Secondary School. Nathan has been playing hockey for more than eleven years and brings a competitive spirit, strong leadership and a deep love for the game both on and off the ice.

Nathan is known by his coaches and teammates as a natural leader. “I plan to use this scholarship to support my university education and to help pursue my academic goals,” said Nathan. “It means a lot to receive an award that honours the legacy of Pat Quinn. I admire the leadership, integrity and commitment to the hockey community that he represented.”

Nathan has faced significant personal challenges as his mother was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo multiple rounds of chemotherapy and surgery. Going through that experience while balancing school and hockey was incredibly difficult, but Nathan used the game as a source of strength and focus during a challenging time for his family. His mother has since beaten cancer, and the experience helped Nathan realize the importance of family, resilience and the support of his hockey community.

He and his team have volunteered with North Shore Family Services, helping purchase gifts for families in need and learning firsthand the importance of supporting their local community.

Louis Qiu (Vancouver) – Pat Quinn Award

Louis is a remarkable student-athlete from Vancouver who plays for the St. George’s U15 Varsity hockey team while attending St. George’s School. Louis has a passion for both hockey and academics—particularly mathematics—and he believes the same values drive success in both: focus, discipline, resilience and a willingness to keep working even when the solution isn’t easy to find. He has achieved numerous national and international mathematics honours, including gold and bronze medals at international competitions and perfect scores in several University of Waterloo math contests.

“Hockey has taught me so much about discipline and leadership since I started playing at the age of four,” said Louis. “Balancing an intense hockey schedule with my studies is a challenge, but it has pushed me to keep my standards in the classroom high. It is a true privilege to representing the values that Pat Quinn stood for.”

He regularly performs classical music on piano and cello for residents at Crofton Manor through the Joy of Arts non-profit organization. He also volunteers within his school community, participates in sustainability initiatives through student government, and teaches free math lessons during the summer to help younger students develop their academic skills.
