Double gold for Burnaby Winter Club teams at the 2025 Pat Quinn Classic, silver streak for Alaska teams

Burnaby, B.C. – Teams from the Burnaby Winter Club earned victories in gold medal games in two divisions at the 2025 Pat Quinn Classic.

In the U15 Integrated Flight 1 Division, BWC Academy U15 beat Abbotsford’s Yale Lions 5-1. “It just says that we’re getting better and better and getting buy-in from the kids and parents. I’m elated for the kids and the families,” said Burnaby head coach Ned Lukacevic. “We have a good bunch behind the club with coaches, staff and directors – people that care about the club, hockey and the families.”

In the U17 Integrated Flight 2 Division, BWC Academy U17 White scored a 3-1 win over Hockey Club Fairbanks, Alaska.

Burnaby Winter Club teams are often in the mix for medals at the Pat Quinn Classic, but U17 Head Coach Dave Wilkie says they take nothing for granted. “It’s never a given. It was a tough battle today against Alaska. We were so excited to see American teams and play against teams that we’ve never played before.”

Easton Coupland, a forward for BWC U17 says it was an exciting afternoon for his club. “I love when the boys come together and we all work together. It’s just a great club to be in,” he said.

As a local club, Wilkie says it’s important to be a part of this tournament. “It’s a big legacy. To have anything that’s got Pat Quinn’s name on it is huge. It’s great for the city of Burnaby to host this many people.”

In the U17 Integrated Flight 1 Division, the Yale U17 Lions scored with less than a minute to go in the third period to beat Team Alaska 16U (from Anchorage) 3-2.  “This was our first big tournament game final of the year. The kids handled the nerves and stuck together to get the job done,” said Lions Head Coach Matt Revel. Playing against an unfamiliar opponent was a good test. “It’s cool to see,” added Revel. “We actually lost to this team in the first game of the tournament.”

For Team Alaska Coach Levi Younger, it was a disappointing loss. “The kids worked hard and put in all the effort. I am proud of them.”  This was the second year for his Alaska team at the Pat Quinn Classic. “It’s good to be here,” added Younger. “All the facilities are super nice.” He wants his players to know about the hockey environment outside of Alaska. “There’s a big hockey world out there. This is next level.”  With two Alaska teams making finals, Younger said “I think we’re doing all right.”

In other games, it was an all-Vancouver Island final in the U15 Integrated Flight 2 Division with Oceanside U15 from Parksville beating Nanaimo U15 Clippers 6-2 for the gold medal.
